Today we have a guest post written by Shea Kucenski of DVFlora. She’s been keeping a close watch on The Lonely Bouquet and has a lovely follow up story for us!

Keeping Up with The Lonely Bouquet!

lonely bouquet in photobooth

It has been just over 2 weeks since the 1st Annual (inter)National Lonely Bouquet Day, and the activity is still blossoming! DVFlora is excited to see Lonely Bouquet activity continue to grow here in the U.S, and we hope all you flower-lovers out there will keep the trend going! June 30th was a huge success, and our pal Emily at Fleuropean has already scheduled next year’s event for June 29th, 2014! In just one month, The Lonely Bouquet’s Facebook page has increased to 5,000 fans and has reached almost 100 cities in the U.S alone! It’s always nice to make someone else’s day with a simple act of kindness, so why not take that act of kindness, and wrap it up in flowers? We encourage anyone and everyone to take part in the heartwarming movement, and continue to pay it forward! If you have any questions or would like more information on The Lonely Bouquet, please e-mail me or check out our Facebook page! As always, share your adventures by tagging #thelonelybouquet or #dvflora on your favorite social website!

Take a look a few amazing photos and stories from friends of DVFlora:

This set is full of smiling faces from the 1st Annual (inter)National Lonely Bouquet Day, which took place June 30th. Don’t forget to sign up for next year’s Day and start preparing yourself by practicing leaving Lonely Bouquets now and then

Buckle your seatbelts, ’cause this one is going to be a long haul. Hop on board the non-stop flight straight from New Jersey to Oveido, Spain! Marina put together two beautiful bouquets that were found by two equally beautiful young ladies! The two nature lovers, Viktoria and Mara, were walking their dogs when they spotted the lonely flowers.

Now we’ll hop, skip, and jump a bit all over the place… from Daley’s Florist & Country Expressions in Connecticut to Sisters In Bloom Kukka- & Juhlapalvelu in Finland… from Kingsthorpe with Helen from Tim Hill Photography and Brighton with the fabulous ladies of Florian.

The list of cities goes on, and on, and on! If you have been kind enough to leave a bouquet, but have not heard back from its new owner, don’t get discouraged. Not all recipients are tech-savvy enough to post their findings, but it does not mean they did not appreciate your kindness!

“Dear Karen, I didn’t have a chance to take a picture but I wanted to let you know that my grandmother loved the bouquet that I brought her over the weekend! She used to have a garden but is now in assisted living and can no longer enjoy her flowers! You brought a smile to her face and a tear to her eyes! Thank you so much for being such a giving person!” Sincerely, Tom

I’ll leave you with my personal favorite Lonely Bouquet adventure thus far. Just goes to show you that even the tiniest of hearts can do huge things:

Lonely Bouquet

“For Erin’s 7th birthday, her big birthday wish was to make a Lonely Bouquet for a stranger to find in Lower Earley… and that she did! Along came Jason, literally a stranger in a new neighborhood, who had felt a bit displaced in his new community. His heart warmed by the kind gesture, Erin’s flowers immediately cheered him up!
So thank you, Erin, for so sweetly welcoming a new-comer to your neighborhood. And thank you, Jason, for letting Erin now that her birthday bouquet has found a loving home!”

Naked: Flowers Exposed

410KYTHBBSL

I just came across this awesome coffee table book of beautiful photos from some the best photographers of the 1990′s.

Publisher’s Notes

Naked exposes the secret thoughts — be they passionate, whimsical, erotic, or even disturbing — that flowers can conjure in our deepest psyches. The photographers who contributed to this book include Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Kelly Klein, Duane Michals, and Herb Ritts, as well as celebrities such as Sofia Coppola and Joel Grey. Each contributor explores in pictures and words what the blossom means to them, using it as a launching point to express their wildest fantasies. The result is stunning: a visual feast that captures the infinite power of the simple flower.

Designed by Sam Shahid, famous for his numerous fashion campaigns, Naked is a truly unique book that will be a must-have for photography lovers, designers, florists, gardeners, and connoisseurs of beauty.

Hints & Tricks of Floral Design

Recently I sent out a twitter request & email to our mailing list, asking for input on seven different questions. Thank you to everyone who sent in their replies!!

Here’s Question #4:
Share with us and the Flirty Fleurs readers a special hint or trick you use at your shop…

Best way to remove stickers from vases? Goo gone! It’s the miracle adhesive remover.
Gerry & Rebecca, Petal’s Edge Floral Design, Washington DC & Alexandria, Virginia

……….

Clean Oasis floral glue spills with…. Oasis floral glue. Dip a wooden skewer in the glue and wait for it to become tacky then dab and roll away the glue spills with the tacky skewer. Works on tools, fabric, plant material and even your skin.
Christine de Beer, My Creative Workbook/ Floral Lifestyle Design, Vancouver, Canada

……….

Fast Orange Hand Cleaner – even removes sap after working with holiday greens!
Melissa, Primrose Floral & Event Design, Massachusetts

……….

I’m always fighting oriental lilies and all that pollen. It goes everywhere. One of our freelancers thought us to use pipe cleaners to clean the pollen off. Amazingly enough brushing the petals with pipe cleaners gets rid of all the pollen dust.
Alexandra, Exquisite Designs, Chicago, Illinois

……….

Crowning Glory takes pollen stains off lilies and other flowers. Spray it on after you remove the anthers. The yellow stains drip right off. Plus it keeps the lily fresh. Nothing else I’ve tried works.
Kate, Lilies and Lavender, Pennsylvania

……….

One of the best setups I’ve seen for designing wristlet corsages, Francoise’s husband created a corsage bar out of PVC Pipe and base board. Francoise can line up the wristlet bases, glue in flowers and leave them on the bar to dry.

Tales from the Trenches

Recently I sent out a twitter request & email to our mailing list, asking for input on seven different questions. Thank you to everyone who sent in their replies!!

Question #5:
Tell us about your Tales from the Trenches. We’ve all experienced crazy situations, and we all love a good laugh. Tell us your crazy stories. Tell us what you did to solve an unexpected situation.

Well, I don’t think I can resist answering question #5. I bet every wedding floral designer has a good crazy story! Mine begins with a gorgeous wedding in the mountains of North Carolina. It was a very curvy route to get to the venue (which I was already a bit nervous about). We made it safely with all the arrangements intact, set everything up, and left feeling very happy! It was a gorgeous wedding!

After about 20 minutes driving back down the mountain I received a phone call from the wedding planner asking where the baby’s breath halos were for the two flower girls. “What halos?” was what I wanted to say. Instead I found a place to pull over and review the order. To make a long story short…it was my fault. The order was revised several times and for some reason the flower halos were left off the final version. Ugh!

I explained the situation to the planner and told her I would be back very soon with some halos. The only way to make it back in time was to quickly locate some baby’s breath (I did not have any white flowers left in my buckets – grrrrrr). We went to three different grocery stores, but no luck. There was not a florist close by…we were in the middle of nowhere…so, we got creative.

I pulled out my clippers and cut off a few branches from a white blooming Crape Myrtle tree in a Food Lion grocery store parking lot – yes, I was desperate and I hate to disappoint! While my assistant drove the van I made two precious halos out of those Crape Myrtle blooms while we headed back up the mountain.

The next curveball was that I got carsick. I turned completely green while making those halos! I very uncomfortably managed to make the halos and we made it back to the venue. I sat in the parking lot with my head between my knees trying to control the nausea while my assistant ran the halos inside. We made it in time for the pictures and the clients never knew there was an issue!

To my delight, one of those sweet little heads wearing a halo constructed with blooms from the Food Lion Crape Myrtle tree was on Style me Pretty – no joke!

My motto…always go the extra mile (even if it makes you sick).
~Amy, Amy Lynne Originals, North Carolina

……….

We once had a wedding where the couple provided an (inexpensive) arch at an outdoor park. It was uneven ground, which was also rock hard and made it difficult to secure and stabilize the structure. We managed to position it, fully decorate it, and then when we turned our back, a soft wind blew through off the water, and the arch fell face first on the ground, completely shattering and scattering the flowers. One of us looked at the other in a panic saying, “What do we do!!??!?” The other responded, “Okay, so we take the arch away, scatter the flowers in a path and in a circle for ceremony. We need to tell the bride/groom what we’re doing and assure them of a refund. Then we run.” The couple was very laid back and exceptionally accommodating. As guests were arriving, they commented on how beautiful and unique the set up was! We laughed the rest of the day at the picture perfect arch falling over. This was very early on, and we have learned many lessons here since.
Gerry & Rebecca, Petal’s Edge Floral Design, Washington DC & Alexandria, Virginia

……….

The day after having a meeting with a Bride’s Mom, the Bride was in England, I had my first small accident in my car. Ever! When we were swapping insurance papers and I looked down I thought no way… it was the Brides Father! The crazy thing is I still got the business!!!
anonymous, British Columbia, Canada

……….

Just for a laugh – I rarely remember to put my decals on the van, so one day I was so proud of myself I remembered. Driving home from deliveries I had someone dangerously tailgate me, it was a highway and they were less than 10″ from my rear. When they finally went by I fingered them. About 5 minutes later I started to laugh remembering the decals – I haven’t put the decals on since! Good thing I own the company.
anonymous, British Columbia, Canada

……….

One of our craziest event situations was years ago when our staff team went to prominent hotel for a wedding setup and one of team members accidentally hit the fire alarm inside the elevator. An immediate evacuation was triggered almost causing the wedding ceremony to be delayed. Instead, this mishap allowed more time for our staff to setup and everything ended up starting on time and looking beautiful!

Visiting Lynnvale Farms, Virginia

Two weeks ago I was out in Virginia teaching a workshop with Holly Chapple. The day before the workshop began the two of us ran around like the two crazed flower lovers that we are! We visited a few flower farms near Holly’s studio and collected tons of beauties for the students to work with. I was thrilled to see Lynnvale Farms with my own eyes, as I’ve corresponded with Andrea for awhile and we’ve posted articles here and here. It was a humid day and suddenly the rain started, it rained so hard! We sat in the barn for awhile and chatted, then braved the rain and ran around the flowers, taking photographs as quickly as possible.
I love visiting farms, to see the hard work and passion that drives a flower farmer!
Thanks, Andrea, for having us over for a visit!!

I’ve wanted to visit Morgan’s flower shop and nursery, Petals & Hedges, for quite awhile. I’ve heard about Morgan for years from Holly, she is a fellow Chapel Designer and we did get to hang out together in NYC during conference … finally I got to visit her business! Petals & Hedges offers Garden Design services in addition to the plentiful variety of plants available at her nursery. Morgan also offers wedding and event floral design services. Talk about busy!!

Growing Your Wedding Business Workshop, Day 1

I hope you all enjoyed the past few days of posts about the farms in Virginia, we had such a fun time visiting all of them! The reason we were in Virginia was for the Growing Your Wedding Business Workshop – Holly and I had a wonderful time meeting designers from various areas of the East Coast, it was a perfect size and intimate workshop where we got down to business. I won’t be going into detail about the business practices that we spoke about, for the blog I’ll share with all of you the beautiful flower arrangements these designers created. On day one we worked on Woodland styled arrangements. I like the Woodland flower arrangement because it pushes most designers outside of their comfort zone – each leaf, each pod, every tiny bit is examined and placed into an intricate design. These ladies blew us away with their bridal bouquets and centerpieces!

Day two of our workshop (I’ll show Day three once we have the photographs back from the photographer).. The morning started with another big business session and the afternoon we got busy with designing. Day two was about the pretty pinks and blushes — the centerpieces were gorgeous! We all enjoyed watching Holly and Mary work on the large designs, so large they were scraping the ceiling.

What’s the most requested flower this wedding season?

Peonies!

Our brides have definitely joined the peony obsession, especially in their bouquets. When peonies are not within their budget, our brides love English Garden Roses as a substitute. Orchids are also highly requested and used within our special event designs.

Peonies. I’m starting to not like them as much. The growers cannot seem to meet the demand and a lot of the plants are inmature leading to small buds and high prices. Let’s also add to this list anything blush and muted colors.
