Russian River Rose Company
Located in Healdsburg, California is a great little rose garden and nursery called Russian River Rose Company. They have over 600 roses included in their collection! One spring day my mother and I made a visit to the gardens, we dilly-dallied about the paths in the display gardens (I like saying dilly-dallied), we quite enjoyed viewing the large selection of roses in bloom – so many sizes and colors. And, oh, the rose scent that was just wafting in the air, it truly added to the experience! We walked around on the garden paths that surround the owners’ personal home and then down the side of the property where rose arches were packed full of thick climbing rose plants in full bloom. They also had quite a few of their rose bushes available for purchase, along with a nice collection of Irises. Every April and May on Saturdays & Sundays they open up their display gardens to the public, so be sure to stop by if you are in the area.
Here are some of the pictures I took while my mother and I perused the gardens-
Roseville Clematis Farm visit by Nancy Cameron
My friend Nancy Cameron of Destiny Hill Farm recently visited Roseville Clematis Farm in Florida and snapped a few pictures for all of us, plus wrote up a re-cap of what she saw. Thank you, Nancy, for sharing your experience with all of us!
Do you love to design with clematis, but wonder why the stems are so expensive?
A recent visit to Roseville Farms in Apopka, Florida gave me a new understanding and appreciation for this glorious, yet high maintenance flower crop.
My husband and I were treated to a tour by Dan Webber, the Vice President of the world’s largest Clematis Nursery. Roseville Farms propagates and grows wholesale clematis plant material as well as cut flower clematis on the site’s 35 acres. They have 500,000 square feet of greenhouses and clematis is the only crop grown at the farm. Clematis is propagated and grown in pots on raised greenhouse workbenches. Nothing is grown in the ground and the clematis plants need constant care.
The facility is in perfect order and remarkably clean for a business dealing with tons of potted dirt. The greenhouses and coolers are neatly organized with the newly propagated young starters, 1 year old and 2 year old clematis retail nursery plants. In addition, there are specific plants, greenhouses and space for the clematis to be sold to florists.
The cut flower clematis production is where things get really interesting with extreme hands on nurturing by the employees. Each plant is groomed to only permit one to two stems to grow up a metal rod. The remaining stems and plant material are cut off. As the vine grows up the rod it is hand clipped to the rod similar to the way orchid stems are treated. But, unlike orchids the vine keeps growing and growing. The caregiving clematis workers must continuously pull each vine down the rod and delicately bend the vine at the base to allow the vine to grow and permit the blossoms to form several feet up the vine. This process goes on for weeks until prime long stems and blossoms are ready to ship out.
To prepare the clematis flower stems for florist hands each stem is cut while remaining attached to the thin metal rod and placed in flower buckets to be moved to the processing area. Female workers wearing coats in a giant cooler are lined up to a waist high work counter where they gently release each vine from the clips and rod. The stem is inspected and if it passes the quality test it is neatly bundled and tagged by variety.
The bundled clematis is then shipped off to flower wholesalers around the world. Dan advises florists to purchase Roseville Farms clematis bundles from your wholesaler. He has made contact with wholesalers in every major market. The clematis cut flowers are amazing with 5 distinct color categories-White, Red, Purple, Pink, and Blue plus each color has sub colors to choose from. Roseville Farms tags each clematis bundle with the variety name to help florists learn the names for placing orders. Check out their website to look at all the clematis color choices. www.clematis.com
Clematis has a long vase life and adds the unique and special element to your creations. Florists, you want to get to know the American cut flower clematis grown by Roseville Farms and sold by your flower wholesaler.
Flower Focus :: Tweedia
Tweedia
I asked a few of my flower friends about their experiences with Tweedia and how they treat the sap that leaks from the stems..
“I love that stuff like nobody’s business. Anything other than blue is hard to find. If I ever see white tweedia or pink Tweedia its like spotting a unicorn. I just cut it, let it leak the milky sap in a container or put it into arrangements at the end. I do pull some of those leaves off when cleaning it and yep the sap goes everywhere. I just embrace it. It’s worth it.” Alexandra of Exquisite Designs
“I cut to approximate lengths take off leaves and let them sit in their own vase.” Laurie of Fleurie
“I wear gloves when I’m designing with it.” Corinne of Sebesta Design
“It’s the perfect blue without going purple. But, it’s a pain. Sticky, droopy at times, but like others have said worth the sacrifice.” Dana of Della Blooms
“It adds a delicacy to a bouquet like nothing else can. And it’s a beautiful natural teal blue, which can be hard to find! Oh, and latex gloves were recommended by my wholesaler. My skin doesn’t mind it, but if you have sensitive skin watch out!” Chandin of Studio 3 Floral
“Makes my hand itch like crazy. Once I received some and it was a droopy mess. Fresh cut into a vase of water with a splash of vinegar and it perked right up. Years ago an old florist told me to use vinegar to firm up gerbers and I was desperate to revive the tweedia and it worked!” Monica of Twigs Floral Design

Peonies of China
Hello flower friends,
I just spent two weeks traveling through China on a fantastic vacation. While there I kept my eyes open for anything floral related to share with you, but really never did come across floral arrangements. However, I did come across peonies in bloom! Oh My Gosh — so many lovely peonies! I snapped a few pictures and am sharing them with all of you today.
Enjoy! –

Spell Check
Hello Flower Friends!
Well, this is a post I probably should have done back in January when everyone was writing up floral bids. Sorry. It has occurred to me that many floral designers don’t know how to spell some of the key words used in floral estimates. So here goes, a few words that I often seen misused/misspelled.
Petals, not Pedals
Aisle, not Isle
Altar, not Alter
Unless you prefer to alter the wedding plan and pedal your bike around the isle instead of walking down the aisle on petals to the altar.
Boutonnière, not Bootinere or about 50 other ways I see people spell this word.
Bouquet, not Bokay. Look it up in a dictionary – Bokay doesn’t exist. I realize some use it as word play…
Mantel, not Mantle. Ok, I got that one wrong, too!
Those are the six words that I most often see misspelled, what are some of the words you see misspelled/misused in floral bids, blog posts, etc.?
And because we cannot possibly have a blog post with out some flowers, I leave you with these gorgeous Ashley Roses grown by Alexandra Farms –

Designing with Herbs
I don’t know about all of you, but I sure am ready for summertime and gardens filled with herbs! Mint, Oregano, Basil, Thyme and Sage – oh, the sweet smell of summer.
Here are a few beauties which I hope will inspire you!
Peony Acres, Salinas, Kansas
Looking for Peonies?? Check out Peony Acres website & Facebook page. Peony Acres is a wholesale cut flower peony farm centrally located in the U.S. — Salina, Kansas.
Peony Acres produces approximately 70,000 stems of peonies each growing season — 70,000 stems! They offer Pinks, Reds, Whites and Coral Peonies, plus, the Anemone style of Peony. Harvest starts this week and lasts for approximately 3 weeks, we all know harvest is dependent on the weather.
They offer a selection of very interesting and old-fashioned peonies like Goldilocks, Mons Jules Elie, and Rasberry Sundae, to name a few. Check out the list of peonies they offer on their website, click on “Peonies” in the menu bar. I also found the pages about the farm’s history and about peonies to be very interesting. Also, I’d recommend signing up for the Harvest Notification email.
