Ok, guys, I have quite the visual treat for you today!! Grab a beverage of choice, sit down and relax and get ready to soak in a whole lotta pretty!
Today I’m sharing images from the Cori Cook Floral Design Studio which is located in Denver, Colorado. This studio is just too adorable for words, yet completely functional. I’m pretty sure you’ll be inspired and may even pick up a new idea to use in your own workspace. Heck, I’m liking how she organizes the towels by the sink area!!

Dior Does It Again!

I’d imagine most of you have seen Dior’s latest floral installation?! I know I was mesmerized by it last week when I saw pictures posted all over Instagram and Facebook.

300,000 stems of Delphinium planted on rolling hills. 300,000 stems! I have a feeling there was a shortage of Delphinium on the market that week in Europe .. lol.
(The more articles I read the more numbers I come across, I’ve seen anywhere from 300-500K Delphiniums were used)
I sure would have loved to have seen this installation in person!

And this is how the inside of the structure looked –

Hello!
How was your week? Still busy with weddings? Seems to me that wedding season is lasting extra long this year for many of you!

Around here..
Last Saturday I taught the bouquet designing and pricing workshop. Was pleased to have 8 attendees, especially considering I scheduled this class last minute! As always, it’s a fascinating class with everyone talking about pricing out bouquets.

Flirty Fleurs Class (2)

Flirty Fleurs Class

I had some left over flowers so designed up this compote arrangement to set at my desk –

Bella Fiori

Check out my car loaded with 50 centerpieces, I don’t think we could have fit in 1 more unless I put it next to my feet! My big ‘ole SUV died earlier this summer and was replaced with a smaller Toyota, I’m still getting used to the smaller size… As for these centerpieces, I was lending a hand to my friend at Brittany Flowers
Bella Fiori Car Loaded

Chad and I stopped by Pikes Place Market after dropping off the above 50 centerpieces. Always fun to stop by the market when we are downtown. The dahlias are still filling up the market –

Pikes Place Dahlias

No events or classes for me this weekend. Instead I’ll be getting my flower fill in the garden this weekend. Cleaning up the dahlias as they give a few last blooms. Planting about 200 tulips bulbs .. fun!

Oh, I am thinking I might schedule a class for next weekend. I know, I know, I’m on some kick with last minute classes!! It’s just been so hectic here the past few months and I seem to be on a day-by-day mindset at the moment!! Stay tuned, I’ll put up the notice on the blog this weekend.

As for the rest of the flower world.
Came across this interesting article by Preston Bailey –
Overcoming Addiction: A Bride Became a Victim of My Crack Cocaine Use
Brave article. I wonder how he really overcame screwing up her wedding and getting back into the good graces of NYC society? I’m sure at the time all those in the circle must have heard about his no-show at the wedding. HMM.

On a lighter, more fun note – Flower House Detroit made the NY Times!
A Detroit Florist’s Vision Turns an Abandoned House Into Art
I’ve been watching the progress all week via Instagram – so fun! I wish I was there and I did consider a last minute plane ticket!!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

How to negotiate with a florist…by a florist by Alison Ellis

Have you ever seen a wedding publication that offered the advice to “negotiate with your vendors” to their readers? I have. A lot. Too much in fact. As a small business owner I think it’s unrealistic to suggest that negotiating is always an option for wedding professionals. Customers shouldn’t be afraid to ask if there’s wiggle room, however, florists often have to say, “unfortunately, not.”

Here’s my advice to engaged couples on negotiating with a wedding florist.

Real Wedding by Love Flowers Shenandoah

Thank you to Heather of Love Flowers Shenandoah for sharing this classic and romantic June 2015 Wedding with us!

Hidden in the hills of West Virginia, this couple found the perfect venue for their June 2015 wedding at the Barn of York Hill. Although the weather was a bit stormy, they made the absolute best of their rainy day with creative lead by their talented photographer, Natural Bliss Photography. The gorgeous setting surrounded by lush apple orchards, a small vineyard, and panoramic views of the encompassing natural beauty made this location a perfect site to design florals for a wedding of rustic elegance.

Going for a palette of merlot and blush we choose to design with David Austin Darcey roses, and California blooms from Florabundance which included dahlias, red & pink astilbe, white calycina, rice flower, agonis afterdark, continus smokebush, and our studios absolute favorite… burgundy scabiosa. Additional accent flowers included quicksand & sahara roses, green and red amaranth, and novelty antique carnations.

Our favorite piece of the day was the Bridal Bouquet. The bride said “Heather’s work far surpassed my greatest expectations. The result was beyond what I could have imagined. Our guests enthusiastically said that the flowers that she and her team arranged made the event.”

Iron Florist 2015 Winner Nick Perez

When did you start your business and where are you based?
We are based in the Tysons Corner, VA area and I founded the business over twenty years ago in the basement of my home.

What is your favorite thing about being a Bloompop Floral Partner?
The best part of partnering with Bloompop is being part of this revolutionary business concept that allows florists to be creative and offer a variety of products that represent their personal aesthetic and for consumers to have choices and the access to that creative talent.

classic-white-flowers-223-2-700

Can you tell us what prompted you to partner with Bloompop?
Their approach to encouraging creativity and not having to conform to strict guidelines but instead encouraging partners to show off their talents.

What (in your mind) is the biggest challenge facing the floral industry today?
The biggest challenge we face going forward in my opinion is creating a more sustainable marketplace that promotes strong environmental and social standards. As we begin to realize the impact of farming on the environment, the focus will soon shift to the floral industry and we need to be better prepared to offer viable solutions to water consumption, chemical use and social practices.

natural-green-flowers-218-3-700

Where & how do you find inspiration for your floral designs?
Inspiration for floral designs are found all around us. On a daily basis, my inspiration comes from the product that I have to work with…looking at the different, creative and unexpected ways I can use it. When it comes to laying out a vision for future designs, I seek inspiration from the people I am creating for and their theme or vision.

Can you describe a typical day at your shop?
First, there is never a “typical” day at the shop! Usually its something different everyday. One day I could be on site, setting up for an event. Another day I could be in meetings all day but when I am at the shop without interruption it’s something like this- Arrive around 7:00 and quickly catch up on email and phone messages and then it’s right to the work room to crank out designs for that day. Most items are made the day before but inevitably there are several things that need to be made that day. Depending on what we have on our schedule, all flowers are usually out the door by 9:30am. At that point I am reviewing the flowers that arrived to us to make sure everything we received is complete and up to our standards. Next, I am back in the office taking care of paperwork while designers are processing flowers. By early afternoon I am back out on the shop floor laying out orders for the next day and getting started with that. If I don’t have any meetings I’m usually out the door to be with my family by 5:00pm.

natural-green-flowers-218-2-700

Bloompop partners with florists by invitation only, hand selecting the top luxury florists–did this play a factor in your joining Bloompop?
That was one of the main reasons for partnering with them. Our interests and standards were aligned and they encouraged us to do what we do best!

succulents-in-glass-bowl-222-2-700

As a designer it isn’t always easy to go hunting for new business opportunities- Would you say that Bloompop helps augment your sales team for business?
Absolutely! I have been toying with the idea of hiring a sales person to get us more traction with corporate work. Bloompop has filled that void without us having to deal with adding staff.

What would you say to a florist who is interested in Bloompop?
I would encourage them to consider it as it’s a great stream of additional revenue. It’s at no cost/no obligation to them and they do not need to stray from their comfort zone with respect to design aesthetic. I think it’s a win-win.

Hello Flower Friends!

I am teaching a compote centerpiece class tomorrow in Seattle if you are nearby and would like to join us!
Bella Fiori

If you’ve been a reader of Flirty Fleurs for awhile you’ve probably seen the graphic design work by my cousin, Kim Schwede. She designed both the Flirty Fleurs Magazine and Bella Bouquets Book. As a fellow Creative, Kim is always looking for inspiration and does come across such interesting articles online. This week she shared this one with me – The Unfair Truth About How Creative People Really Succeed. Really good lessons in this one!

Care & Handling of Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas .. the flower that instills fear into so many floral designers.
Quite often in my design classes people will ask for tips on how to keep this flower alive in flower arrangements. Personally I love hydrangeas and have used tons of them over the years .. even in bridal bouquets, in July, in Colorado — think hot, hot, hot!

Here are my steps for processing and caring for hydrangeas –

When the hydrangeas arrive from the wholesaler the first thing I do is remove all the plastic wrap on their blooms.

Hydrangeas when they arrive for processing

Hydrangeas when they arrive for processing

Next, the important step — I submerge all hydrangea heads into a tub full of water!
I soak them for 20-30 minutes. Sometimes I forget and they end up soaking for an hour, no biggy.
I find soaking to be an extremely important step in the care of hydrangeas.
1) It washes all the dirt off their petals, it’s amazing how much dirt comes off – the water is always murky after the soaking.
2) Soaking rehydrates the flowers. Any bit of wilting is cured.
3) Soaking helps to fluff up the blooms, especially the hydrangeas shipped in from South America.

Hydrangeas Soaking

Hydrangeas Soaking

After the hydrangeas have been soaked I give their stems a fresh cut, removing about 1-2″ of the stem (and the little baggy if they are from South America) and immediately place them into a bucket with fresh water.
I do not use floral food, no particular reason why – I really just never use floral food with any of my flowers.

I leave the buckets of hydrangea out until the blooms are completely dried off from their soaking.
Once dry I place them in the cooler to harden off.
Overnight in the cooler and the next day they are in a great shape to use in designs. You’ll notice how firm the blooms are after this treatment.

Yes, I do use hydrangeas in bouquet work!! I spray a good amount of Crowning Glory on the hydrangeas.
It is important to spray the hydrangeas with the Crowning Glory and then leave them out for the CG to dry. Once it has dried the bouquets can be placed back into the cooler until it is time to deliver them.

Swan Island Dahlias – Canby, Oregon

A few weeks ago as Chad and I drove north from California to Washington we stopped for a visit at Swan Island Dahlias, located in Canby, Oregon. I’ve heard of Swan Island Dahlias for quite some time and had heard that they have 40 acres of Dahlia fields, yet I was still blown away when we rounded the corner and all the fields of dahlias came into view!!
We were able to park the car and take our dogs out for a walk thru all the fields. It was so peaceful and beautiful and the perfect place to stretch our legs.
I highly recommend visiting here during the blooming season – pop into the gift shop and grab the catalog, that way you can make notes on varieties as you peruse the Display Garden. All the varieties are labeled at the end of the row — so bring your camera, too!

Wedding Inspiration by Love Flowers Shenandoah, Virginia

Thank you to Heather of Love Flowers Shenandoah for sharing these lovely images with us today!
Enjoy –

This wedding pays homage to the antiquity that Virginia offers. We wanted to capture the timelessness of the Shenandoah Valley while still looking forward and introducing new ideas for pieces from the past. Legacy items included vintage china, antique silver flatware, three generation hand-crafted quilts, heirloom peonies, vintage automobile, and hors d’oeuvres hour serenading by the sounds of a mandolin. Giving new life to our legacy items our DIY projects included a vintage china archway for the ceremony, refinished and reupholstered Victorian and Art Deco wooden chairs, and handmade flower girl dresses with upcycled tulle from weddings past. Sources for our wedding came from home collections and lovely Virginia boutiques (Sweet Tea, Winchester) that specialize in unique finds and new designs. Special professional touches include a fabulous six tier cake, and a 7’ overhead floral installation for the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley’s timeless pink pavilion.

The flowers, a focal point of the day were designed by Love Flowers Shenandoah, Winchester VA. Designs included the tea cup ring-bearer alternative, overhead hanging floral installation, and floral halos. Kicking up the styles indicative of the modern garden wedding the flowers had a new unique and playful spin. Varieties included a large percentage of USA and home-grown Virginia florals such as Heirloom Peonies, Amaranthus, Garden Roses, Poppies, Cymbidium Orchids, James Storei Orchids, Ranunculus, Freesia, and more.

The photography by Stephanie Leigh Photography & Design, Winchester VA took a fresh and artistic approach. Her use of light and composition brought out the personality of the wedding and captured both the images and the atmosphere in which Virginia weddings hold so dear. Along with the photography, Stephanie Leigh also provided custom designs for the wedding invitations and signage.

Doubling as our visionary and stylist, Fabulous Wedding Cakes provided much of the antiquities, heirlooms, and concepts including the use and creation of the vintage china archway. A juxtaposition- mixed material cake construction of six layers of alternating crystal, edible lace, hand-crafted sugar flowers, and fondant design adorned the wedding with a matching set of cupcakes for each place setting. The venue, The Museum of the Shenandoah, like much of the Virginia Blue Ridge boasts classic picturesque views and deep historic root that cultivate rich artistic and creative expression.
