Farm to Vase Rose Workshop: designing roses on a flower farm
Farm to Vase Rose Workshop: designing roses on a flower farm
Mount Vernon, Washington
June 12, 2018
Registration Closes this Wednesday, June 6, 2018
Join Alicia Schwede of Flirty Fleurs Blog & Bella Fiori Design and Dawn Severin of All My Thyme for a day filled with exploration of fine-art floristry and boutique rose farming in Washington’s beautiful Skagit Valley.
The day will begin by gathering at the barn on All My Thyme farm; take a peek out the back door and you’ll see the roses beckoning us to come out to the field. Get ready to stroll down row after row of blooming rose bushes as Dawn shares her experiences and knowledge of the 100 plus varieties of heirloom and contemporary roses she grows exclusively for floral design work. You’ll learn care and maintenance, proper cutting techniques, post harvest handling, and other tips to keep your shrubs producing stems throughout the season. After our walkabout, we’ll utilize a ‘hands on’ approach (with gloves, of course!) and encourage you to clip some stems that may have caught your eye and imagination. Awaiting us at the barn will be a beautifully curated collection of roses and complementary seasonal flowers and foliages to use in our designs; this is simply an opportunity to hand-select some stems you’ll use for your own design, and practice proper harvesting techniques.
A leisurely lunch will be followed by our afternoon design session, in which Alicia will demonstrate the art of the lush, garden-inspired compote centerpiece. Following her demonstration, each attendee will create their own floral still life overflowing with garden roses. We will encourage you to take your time – as the saying goes, stop and smell the roses! This is your time to fully appreciate all the beauty freshly cut from the rose farm, to explore the natural placement and movement of the flowers as they are incorporated into the design.
To preserve the day and the floral artistry of each designer, a photographer will then capture your arrangement for your portfolio.
We look forward to welcoming you to the farm, and are thrilled to be able to share our love of roses with you!
This class is open to all skill levels in floristry.

South of France ~ An Idyllic Flower Journey
South of France ~ An Idyllic Flower Journey
Somewhere down a winding country road, an hour south of Toulouse, there lies a tiny medieval village where copper artisans are hard at work on their wares. It is here, in Durfort, among unspoiled scenery of the Pyrenees mountain range that we discover a slow-living, authentic French way of life.
Seemingly, untouched by time, the region holds magic and charm that will steal your heart.
The first time I visited the South of France, I was struck by three things: the natural beauty of the region, their simple, unhurried way of life, and their love of flowers and beauty. The French don’t see flowers as a luxury – or something to have on special occasions…they see flowers as a necessity for their joie de vivre, and the art of living well. The French love fresh flowers on their table daily, flower boxes on their windows, vining, rambling roses, and sprawling garden spaces with hydrangeas, sunflowers, and lavender. The way they see it, flowers are for pleasure! This “pleasure factor”, lends itself to their slow-living way of life that I fell in love with. They don’t squander time, (au, contraire!) they savor time. Like the way in the small villages, the school children come home at Noon to sit down to a homemade family meal. The family finds pleasure in each other’s company and finds joy in discussing the activities of the day. The children return to school at 2:00, refreshed and eager to learn! (Can you imagine?!) It is this simple approach to life and living that I chose to host our weeklong floral retreat. Attendees get to not only embrace French culture and charm, but also savor a bit of local life, learn the French approach to floral design and their love of flowers. During our time in this idyllic setting, we draw creative inspiration from our surroundings, using local foraged blooms & greenery among the fields and small villages. We also get to savor the outdoors, surrounded by mountains, a river waterfall, and the lush
Mediterranean climate. Time is spent having open-air floral arranging, creating French-inspired bouquets, flower crowns, flat-lays, fine art botanical prints, and dining under the stars! Plus, I have found it is impossible to visit this part of the world without a visit to the famed French flea markets for treasures! Inspiration is everywhere! And, vases & French brocante’ abound to use in designs!
It is here, in this idyllic, unspoiled, unhurried, calm of life, the South of France, where one can really stop-and-smell-the-flowers! Time here stands still. Time here will change your perspective. And, most certainly, steal your heart.
Spaces are still available on our next journey. September 27 – October 4, 2018

The New York Botanical Garden’s Floral Design Summer Intensive Program
The New York Botanical Garden’s Floral Design Summer Intensive is perfect for budding designers who want to jump-start a new career. This immersive program lets you complete all your classroom requirements — so you’re only an internship away from your prestigious Certificate in Floral Design! Along with comprehensive hands-on instruction from industry pros, you’ll develop the contacts and business savvy you need to advance your career or manage your own shop.
Amy Roberts has accomplished a lot in the year since she completed the 2017 Summer Intensive: “I used to work in the art world, and I wasn’t happy. Then I had an epiphany — I wanted to be a floral designer, and I wanted to do that as quickly as possible. In April, I had never taken a floral course. By the end of the year, I was working as a full-fledged designer and wedding consultant for Starbright Floral Designs! Where else can you do that?”
Over the five-week program, you’ll work one-on-one with professional instructors, creating 40 different arrangements in diverse styles — from simple to grand-scale — while getting real-world insights into the business of floral design. “In addition to a strong professional foundation, the NYBG Floral Program gave me the confidence in myself as a designer that opened doors to future opportunities and eventually lead me to start my own business – Iris & Virgil,” says 2016 Summer Intensive graduate Victoria Monsul Singolda.
The Floral Design Certificate Program at NYBG offers the most in-depth training in the region, covering every aspect of this creative art. We’ll help you develop your own aesthetic, master the mechanics for any arrangement, and gain practical business skills, so you graduate client-ready.
