Musings of a Florist :: visit flirty fleurs on Tuesdays and read a variety of musings by me – Alicia Schwede, editor of the blog.
I’ll be sharing some thoughts of what I’ve learned, what I would do differently, and what I’m thankful for on this flower filled journey I’ve been on since 1998.
Emergency Plan
I’ve had this conversation with quite a few of my peers over the years. What will you do if you have weddings/events booked and an emergency situation arises?
By emergency I mean something big- being hospitalized, an emergency out of state, broken leg/arm, etc.
Who can step in to execute an event should this happen? Do you have a group of likeminded peers/florist friends who can help? Where are your files kept and does someone know how to access the files?
It’s scary stuff, yet so many Florists are one-woman or one-man shows and having an emergency plan in place is imperative.
Once while I was living in Colorado my father was hospitalized in California- it was a scary situation and all I wanted to do was fly home and be with my family. It was September 2012 and at that time I did not have employees. Chad and our friend Steve helped me execute one wedding install on a Saturday afternoon and I left straight from that wedding to the airport. I had a wedding booked for the following Saturday in Vail… I called on my friends, Juanita who was mentioned in the last post, Robyn of @barerootflora , Amy of @flowerhousedenver , and Chuck of @chuckgrahamfd all pitched in to help me get through the next week, flowers processed and designed, heck Robyn & Juanita met with my client who was picking up a few plants! They got me through that week – thank goodness I had them to have my back.
Oh and believe me – I’d do the same for them!
So give it some thought – what is your emergency plan?
