Tips on Tipping with Alison Ellis

$

Does the wedding florist get tipped? This is a question that’s been answered before, but unfortunately no one asked florists for their opinion!
Here’s the truth, most of the time florists don’t tend to be on the “must tip list”. So what should you do about it? Click to watch!

Remember: Charge what you’re worth! Don’t work for tips; work for profit!
Keep doing beautiful work!

floral design workshop in los angeles, california with alicia schwede of flirty fleurs, photography by caroline tran

Wedding Intensive Workshop
a three day floral design workshop
Hosted by Alicia Schwede of Flirty Fleurs at the Studio of Photographer Caroline Tran
Los Angeles, California
October 22, 23, & 24, 2019

I am thrilled to share that this October I will be holding a 3 Day Floral Design Workshop focused on Wedding Designs in Los Angeles, California!

The workshop will take place at the bright and airy studio of photographer Caroline Tran in downtown Los Angeles. We are thrilled to share that Caroline will be photographing our workshop! Truly an amazing and talented artist, we are so lucky to spend three days with her in her studio.

Paper floral artist Quynh Nguyen of Pink & Posey will be joining our workshop, she will share how to work with paper flowers in fresh floral displays. Why paper flowers? They are an art form in themselves and they work amazingly well for us floral designers who cannot get certain flowers in the off-season. Seriously – wait until you see the peonies she creates!

As for me, Alicia, I have specialized and delighted in weddings for the past 20 years and am looking forward to sharing what I have learned about flower care and designing with fellow flower lovers.

What’s included:

  • 3 Days of Hands-On Design Experience
  • Photographer Extraordinaire Caroline Tran will be photographing our workshop! You’ll have her beautiful images of your designs!
  • Caroline will also teach you how to use your mobile phone to capture your own floral designs!
  • Learn how to create large scale installations
  • Bridal Bouquets – 3 different techniques to create bouquets
  • Compote styled centerpieces
  • Large sized altar arrangements
  • Botanical jewelry – corsages, boutonnieres, flower halos
  • Continental breakfast and a catered lunch each day.
  • A gift basket of items personally selected by the instructors for their usefulness, helpful information, or because they are just plain fun.
  • anddddd Caroline, Quynh, and I have more up our sleeves to make sure you have a great time at the workshop!

All photographs seen on this page were taken by Caroline Tran at the workshop hosted by Quynh of Pink & Posey this past April. I taught sessions on creating a hanging chandelier and the moon arch along with centerpieces.

Caroline Tran Photography and Alicia Schwede from Flirty Fleurs - Floral Design Workshop

This workshop is designed for both budding and experienced florists who are looking to be inspired and learn. All instruction for designs will be done in a step-by-step fashion.
This workshop will be a limited to 8 participants. The group will be petite and each attendee will receive plenty of individual instruction, plus, with a group so small attendees will have a chance to connect with each other forging new friendships.
All fresh flowers, tools, and vessels are included. Just bring yourself!

I jumped at the chance to sign up for Alicia Schwede’s Wedding Intensive Workshop the minute I received the informational email! My floral business is mainly wedding work and I was trained many years ago. This was my chance to learn new mechanics and new design skills.
I had taken a prior Bouquet & Compote class from Alicia a few years ago and was so inspired by her vision and teaching skills, that I knew I needed to take another class in the future.
This workshop blew me away! Not only with the content that was going to covered but knowing the class size was going to be small, meant it was going to be very hands on! The class was paced for any level of skill!
Alicia and her assistant, Keita, gave us all the confidence to design what was in our hearts but also, to not be hesitant to try new things! The skills and mechanics that I learned are forever engraved in my mind! Each day was planned with things to cover and paced perfectly! The flowers that we had available for designing was incredible!
My only disappointment is that it went by so fast! Our group just clicked with each other! Laughter, encouragement and support was a common thread every day! I will miss these ladies very much!
I highly recommend taking a class from Alicia Schwede @FlirtyFleurs! Whether a few hours or a few days! You will come out of it inspired, energized and excited to try out your new found skills!
Happy Flowering! 🌸

I heard about Alicia’s four day wedding intensive by following Flirty Fleurs on Instagram. I debated for several weeks about traveling across the country to attend, but I decided to go for it. It was a great four days of learning how to create all of the important wedding florals, plus education on purchasing flowers and dealing with wholesalers and pricing and other business aspects of weddings. I’m so glad I made the trip. The small group size allowed Alicia and Keita to be immediately available to help and critique our designs. I would highly recommend the class to anyone interested in learning about wedding florals!

Being surrounded by flower enthusiasts is a wonderful thing and I love watching students work on a design and how their eyes light up when the design is completed. The words I live to hear from students – “this was such a fun day, I can’t wait to do it again!”

Alicia Schwede practically grew up in a garden, playing amongst her grandmother’s roses and clipping sweet peas and lilacs from her neighbor’s yards. Alicia launched her floral career in 1998 in San Francisco, California. After a move to Denver, CO, she launched Bella Fiori in 2003. Within two years she was winning awards for her floral art and receiving the first of over 40 features in print and nearly 100 online.

Alicia launched her website Flirty Fleurs in 2010 as a blog to share her love of flowers with others, celebrate great floral designers, and support other florists. It has become one of the most heavily trafficked websites in the industry because of her passion and the wealth of information that is available. She has become a leader in the industry, presenting at Florabundance Inspirational Design Days every year. Alicia is a sought after adviser to growers, wholesalers and florists alike and has her own collection of bulb flowers offered by Longfield Gardens.

In addition to Flirty Fleurs, Alicia has published a book of bridal bouquets titled Bella Bouquets, and the magazine Flirty Fleurs. Alicia takes on the occasional wedding through her studio, Bella Fiori in Arlington, WA outside of Seattle.

Floral DeliverEase, for Floral Deliveries

Floral DeliverEase for Floral Deliveries – I recently received samples of DeliverEase for review. I’ve heard of this delivery system for years and have always been curious about it. Luckily the samples arrived just in time for a wedding order I was delivering. As you’ll see in the photos below, I had footed vases to transport to the wedding which are never the easiest style to pack. I situated the compotes into the DelivereEase and they did fit snuggly.
A few questions I had before trying out Deliverease – how bulky will the foam pieces be and how sturdy will they be. I’m pleased to say they aren’t too bulky, this is important to me as I have limited space to store these when they are not in use. Also, I was so curious to know how sturdy they would be once loaded with 4 arrangements. I wondered if the whole piece could be carried from the car to the wedding reception space — I am pleased to say the whole piece was carried without incident to the reception room, in fact I think they barely had water splash out! None of the flowers moved during transport and the arrangements were easily pulled up out of DeliverEase and placed on the tables.
Final thoughts – I’m very pleased with DeliverEase, I like how nicely they held my arrangements in place without me having to gather up paper or towels to wrap around the base of the footed vessel for transport. I also like how clean and professional they looked during delivery.
All in all, I’d say they are a great product for floral designers!

The David Austin Wedding & Event Roses team have been busy preparing for a fabulous wedding day, set in the heart of the English countryside. Watch a rose-filled moment unfold as all aspects of this special occasion are festooned in glorious roses from their cut rose collection. The team share their insights below.

David Austin Roses - confetti of rose petals tossed over the bride and groom

Our absolute favourite shot – capturing both the beauty of the roses, the glorious rainfall of rose petals and above all, a special moment of pure love and joy held between two people.

The groom’s button hole or boutonnière full of meaning – a symbol of beauty in nature and of love undefined, captured in a single bloom of Ella (Auswagsy), one of our newest varieties, chosen to match the bride’s bouquet. ...We didn’t want to leave out the groom who plays an equally important role!

A touching moment between father and daughter as they walk to church, arm in arm. A very proud dad and a beautiful bride holding an exquisite bouquet of Ella (Auswagsy) roses complemented with seasonal flowers and foliage along with cascading jasmine trails. The hand-died silk ribbon had a beautiful softness in colour and was kept long to create added movement and romance.

Brushed gold cutlery tied with silk ribbon and calligraphy name tags, along with gold edged plates and glasses all add a subtle note of opulence and formality to a wonderful, relaxed occasion. A very English menu was served including a medallion of beef with a medley of garden vegetables followed by a spiced apple and plum crumble.

The floral rose decorations ran throughout the couple’s special day and it was not all about the larger-scale creations. The smaller, more intimate flowers were equally as important – from the small posy of roses in the bride’s bedroom; the single rose in her hair; the button holes for the bridal party; the wedding wreath on the front door and the arrangements on the back of the banqueting chairs. Like music, we love to create light and shade with our roses, which in turn deliver such emotion. From the pianissimo of the groom’s button hole being placed on his lapel through to the crescendo of the couple walking through the floral arch, showered with a cascade of petals.

The final scene ..... Dad’s classic car, which he has lovingly restored in readiness for this moment – his daughter finding true love and starting a new chapter of her life. The bridal bouquet, still in her hands, has stayed close to her heart every step of the way and will always hold the special memories of this day.

An English Country Wedding was a very personal creation by the David Austin team but equally, every wedding around the world is different, which we truly celebrate. The David Austin mantra is always be true to yourself. The most distinctive style is one infused with personal touches and considered details. From the roses you hold in your hands to those that create a magical sense of theatre for family and friends. Be personal, be authentic and be breath-taking. Be inspired by beauty all around you, in whatever shape that takes… love will always shine through.

Sharing photos of our latest floral design class which took place at Fran’s Chocolate Shop this past August. Fran’s chocolates has an absolutely stunning space in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, soaring ceilings, bright light pouring in the windows, a fun industrial style throughout. The ladies who attended the class were treated to a lovely assortment of chocolates and drinks from the espresso bar Fran’s has in the space. We had a great time designing with dahlias, garden roses, zinnias, lisianthus, and an assortment of foliages. For most of the ladies this was their first time every creating a flower centerpiece!! Every single arrangement turned out beautiful and I was just thrilled with how everyone did creating their centerpiece!
Please enjoy the photos and be sure to sign up for our workshop newsletter so you can be notified of the next time we offer a centerpiece creating workshop!

Q & A: Should Florists Charge For A Consultation? with Alison Ellis

$

A florist asked the other day: “Should I charge for consultations? I do not charge for a consultation and I e-mail a proposal after we meet without a deposit. I feel like I am being price shopped and I’m wasting my time. What do you do to prevent this?”

Click to watch my A to her Q and find out why I don’t charge for consultations!

It’s not easy to charge for consults and proposals when others offer them for free, but pre-qualifying is the first step that florists want to perfect here. If you vet clients before meeting, that helps eliminate price shoppers. (A simple inquiry form is your first line of defense.)

Then, instead of meeting, which could take 1-3 hours of my day depending on the location, I start with a phone consultation. And then, I do a really quick, easy proposal so I don’t invest “too much time” before discovering we’re not a good fit….whether that be due to budget expectations or style or personality.

Additionally, I establish a minimum before we schedule the call. Again, that initial inquiry form helps confirm the expectations here. As a result, price shoppers are stopped in their tracks at that point so neither one of us is wasting our time!

My Wedding Templates for florists illustrate exactly how I write a proposal, request a minimum, and present a contract, so if you need some tips to improve your current booking systems check out my templates here: https://realflowerbusiness.com/pdfs/

Thanks so much for taking the time to watch.
Keep doing beautiful work!

David Austin Roses launches sustainable packaging for bare root planting this season

As part of the leading rose breeder’s ongoing commitment to reducing its plastic consumption and impact on the environment, David Austin Roses is pleased to announce that its range of bare root roses now comes in plastic-free packaging.

david austin garden roses - bare root roses Without the need for a pot, these dormant plants have until now been packaged in an inner carrier made of plastic, accompanied by paperwork protected in a separate plastic covering. Designed to lock in vital natural moisture and prevent dehydration during delivery and storage, these carriers provide vital protection in transit:

“Removing these carriers in their entirety wasn’t an option but we knew a plastic-free solution was out there. We wanted something that was recyclable at the very least but had to keep our plants safe and hydrated till planted. After extensive research we were able to come up with a carrier made from potato starch, which is 100% biodegradable and perfect for the compost heap or the food waste bin. We’ve also refreshed the design of the outer brown bag, giving it a new look while keeping it fully recyclable,” explains Richard Austin, Head of Marketing.

Gardening enthusiasts will already know the many benefits of these eco-friendly beauties: great for mass planting, they are physically lighter to handle, easier to store and can prove a cost-effective way to overhaul any garden. From the simplicity of planting three bare root roses of the same variety together to craft a larger rose bush, to a complete border transformation by mass planting in one colour to create a modern colour-block effect, bare roots offer an even more sustainable way to create high visual and sensory impact in any outdoor space.

Richard adds:
“For those who love being outdoors come rain or shine, there’s something particularly special about planting bare roots; though their wiry stems are arguably less than attractive at first, there’s an added sense of anticipation in seeing the fruits of your autumn or winter labours the following summer – a feeling not dissimilar to breeding a new rose. Knowing that your beautiful roses have made as little impact on the environment as possible, to my mind, makes bare root planting an even more sustainable way to transform gardens and outdoor spaces summer after summer.”

How “Excellent” is Your Brand? by: Ryan O’Neil, Curate Founder / CEO

Your brand is the most valuable asset your company has. If anyone knows of the effort that goes into brands – I do. Because I watched my wife as she built hers. One memory in particular sticks out.

It was the first wedding my wife had ever done over $5,000. The mom and daughter were self-planning and they had taken a chance on us with one caveat: she had to do their bridal shower several months before. At that time in her company, she was hungry to grow and accepted any challenge that came her way.

The day before the bridal shower in St. Louis in January, our vacation in Louisiana literally froze over and all major roads were shut down. We left our hotel at 4 am hoping to catch our 8 am flight. At 2:00 pm, we finally made it to the airport and found out at 6 pm the last flight out was canceled. So we drove through the weathered night and arrived at 7 am in time to pick up flowers from the wholesaler, make the big bomb arrangements, and deliver by 10 am. We traveled awake for 28 hours. And we did it because her brand was on the line.

That was her brand. My wife went above and beyond because her brand had to be excellent. And I’m sure you have similar stories about what you have invested with your brand.

That’s why at Curate, we decided to completely overhaul our application with the florist’s brand in mind.

Curate is the florist software platform created specifically for the needs of wedding and event floral shops. Unlike spreadsheets and sticky notes, Curate automates the entire process from proposal to strike, letting florists spend more time doing the things they love most.

While overhauling our application, we did a deep study into the industry and how effective floral brands work. The big question is this: what do your customers expect in an excellent brand experience? Here’s what we’ve learned:

Learning #1: Millennials and Gen Zers are “digital natives” and expect their experiences with your brand to match what they see from Pinterest or Instagram.

Many florists are interacting with their clients using antiquated methods that were once “cutting edge” and the “bees knees.” In the early 2000’s, it was a novelty to get emailed a proposal that only works in pdf form or a Word doc. Clients are digital natives. Those methods no longer work.

We are approaching 2020 and today’s clients truly want an experience over Word documents and PDFs. And they want it all optimized for their increasingly digital lives. They want to experience the images you selected, interact with the vision you have created, and say “I do!” with an in-app, pay-and-sign experience.

Curate took this learning to heart in building the experience your clients have. Curate has an incredible Pinterest integration to help you and clients. Curate even has negotiated rates to get credit card processing fees reduced for all users. No extra invoicing fees. What does this mean? For your clients, no random middleman fees and for you, more profitable weddings.

Learning #2: Your clients expect your brand to provide a customized experience – both of your brand and of their event.

Millennials and Gen Zers are some of the largest consumers in today’s society, especially within the events industry. They are expecting every brand they interact with to provide a customized experience with excellent service. And that expectation is rapidly spreading to all clients.

Many solutions only allow you to choose a handful of cookie-cutter templates for your proposals. This means that every other florist in your market has a proposal with the same look. Cookie cutters are great for making cookies, but you and your clients are one-of-a kind!

Here’s the truth: You offer stunning, one-of-a-kind design pieces, that come from you and the client’s heart. Your proposals deserve the same.

Clients want to see that they are unique, and they want assurance that their special event is customized to their childhood fantasy, budget, and their Pinterest board.

With these learnings, we’ve optimized Curate to have multiple themes with customizable fonts that match your brand. Curate allows you to select a look that both reflects your brand and your client’s perfect dream.

Learning #3: Your clients expect immediate responsiveness.

Automated Responses From Forms
The very best brands that your customers interface with are incredibly responsive. And your customers now expect that of you. Statistics say that you need to reach out to a new inquiry in 5 minutes or your chances of qualifying them decreases by 80%(!!).

This is why you need a forms tool that will automate this for you. This is why we built this into Curate. When a new lead comes in, you can automatically send a response with an introduction and next steps. You have to have forms to guide this process and you have to automation to ensure your clients have an excellent experience.

Pricing On-The-Spot
Clients want to leave your consultation with a proposal in hand. Here are the stats. My wife and I ran the numbers and when we handed a proposal by the end of a consultation, our on-the-spot bookings increased by 400%.

When it comes to pricing, delivering something immediate for your clients is hard to do, especially if you have manual processes in place to figure it out! All the stem counting, sprinkled with a little rounding and guessing can really bite into your bottom line over time.

This is why Curate was created and is trusted by florists all over the world.

Curate allows you to standardize your margins and ensure you are fair to your client, but also to yourself! At the end of the day, pricing fair is the best way that you can deliver the excellent service your client expects. Plus you want guaranteed profitability so you can invest money back into your business or take that vacation that you so desperately need…and deserve!

And what are you to do when your client falls in love with that one beautiful vase that is super popular this season? Before you promise it to them, do you have an easy way to make sure that it’s available? Instead of winging it with rentals, florists are moving to instant, real-time inventory tracking with Curate, which includes the most robust functionality in the industry.

Being excellent includes having overbooked notifications in case you grab one too many pieces for a weekend and having an entire pull and return list that updates inventory in real time to account for the broken votives from your last event. Your clients will love (and expect) that promised item front and center on the day of their special event.

As florists everywhere are growing their brand, they are also raising the bar. From delivering front-of-house excellence to creating incredibly custom arrangements and installations, there is a renewed emphasis on delivering excellence at every point of the client’s experience. That is why Curate has invested countless hours into making sure your brand can have custom proposals, excellent back-of house processes, and intelligent rental inventory.

Through all this, your client has an excellent experience, showing that you are clearly the florist that understands their vision. Why give them anything less than excellence?

As a family who started a wedding and events floral shop, we have learned so much about growing a brand and giving the client an excellent experience, no matter what. Some pieces are out of your control, but other times, there are small changes you can make to have incredible, brand-worthy impacts.

Schedule a consultation with our team to see how you can also grow your brand with a customizable, brand-worthy Curate solution.

FOURTH ANNUAL SLOW FLOWERS SUMMIT TO PARTNER WITH BAY AREA’S FILOLI
The Summit expands to 2-1/2 days of design inspiration, creative floral installations,
branding insights and conversations about sustainable floristry
June 28-30, 2020

Debra Prinzing, founder and creative director of Slow Flowers LLC, announced a new West Coast venue partnership and program details of the fourth annual SLOW FLOWERS SUMMIT, coinciding with the sixth American Flowers Week campaign.
“The SLOW FLOWERS SUMMIT serves the progressive floral community of designers, growers, farmer-florists, wholesalers, retailers and flower lovers,” says Prinzing, producer of the Summit and founder of the Slow Flowers Movement. Teresa Sabankaya, owner of Bonny Doon Garden Co., in Santa Cruz, Calif., will serve as co-host of the Summit.
“As an inclusive gathering for creative floral professionals, the SUMMIT reflects the mission of Slow Flowers: “To change the flower sourcing practices of consumers and professionals through outreach and education that highlights the benefits of local, seasonal and domestic floral agriculture.”

For 2020, the SUMMIT returns to the West Coast with a strategic partnership with Filoli Historic House and Garden in Woodside, Calif., outside San Francisco. “We are so excited for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty and legacy of this Bay Area cultural institution,” Prinzing said. “Summit attendees, speakers, sponsors and guests will spend two full days experiencing the historic residence, as well as Filoli’s legendary landscape and cutting gardens. We also will have unprecedented access to design a ‘floral takeover’ in ‘The House,’ California’s most triumphant example of the Georgian Revival tradition and one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century.”

On June 30, 2020, the SUMMIT will be hosted in San Francisco by Christina Stembel, founder and CEO of Farmgirl Flowers, who invites attendees to an exclusive, behind-the-scenes morning tour and presentation at Farmgirl Flowers’ HQ. Stembel is a past keynote speaker of the Summit and was recently named to the San Francisco Business Times’ Most Admired CEOs of 2019.

Prinzing developed the SUMMIT as an alternative to conventional floral conferences and as an interactive “live” component to the virtual American Flowers Week campaign (June 28-July 4). AFW devotes a week of activity via regional events and social media platforms to promote domestic flowers, raise consumer awareness and unite America’s flower farmers with the U.S. floral industry.

SPEAKERS:
Keynote speaker Susan Mcleary, an Ann Arbor, Michigan-based floral designer, artist and author, will kick off the Slow Flowers Summit lecture series with an original, highly personal presentation that shares and encourages attendees with her approach to nurturing and sustaining a creative life. Sue’s floral design demonstration will be followed by a signing for her first book, The Art of Wearable Flowers.

A panel will follow, featuring the voices and artistry of three farmer-florists, moderated by Kellee Matsushita-Tseng of the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems in Santa Cruz. With panelists Molly Culver of Brooklyn-based Molly Oliver Flowers and Emily Saeger of Filoli’s Horticulture Program, they will present Sustainable Farming x Floral Design, discussing how roots in floral agriculture influence and inspire their floral art. Each will design a signature floral arrangement using all local-and seasonal ingredients.

Artist and designer, writer, editor and educator Lorene Edwards Forkner is a columnist for the Seattle Times’ weekly gardening column and author of five garden books, including Handmade Garden Projects. Lorene’s interactive presentation is inspired by her Instagram series, Seeing Color in the Garden, found @gardenercook.

Oakland-based Pilar Zuniga, owner of Gorgeous & Green, is a floral designer known for her sustainable practices, local sourcing and vivid aesthetic. Pilar has lectured on sustainability and entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and she will discuss Branding the Sustainable Floral Business followed by a design demonstration of her iconic floral style.

Capstone speaker Jennifer Jewell is the is the creator and host of Cultivating Place, an award-winning public radio program and podcast about natural history and the human impulse to garden. She is based in Chico, Calif. Jennifer’s presentation is drawn from her new book, The Earth In Her Hands, 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants, and centers on women transforming horticulture around the world.

Musings of a Florist :: visit flirty fleurs on Tuesdays and read a variety of musings by me – Alicia Schwede, editor of the blog.

I’ll be sharing some thoughts of what I’ve learned, what I would do differently, and what I’m thankful for on this flower filled journey I’ve been on since 1998.

The Early Days
In January of 2002 I drove from the Bay Area to Denver to visit my friend who had been transferred there for work. I planned to stay 4-6 weeks, help her settle in, spend some time skiing, etc. Only a few months after 9/11 and the Bay Area was unsettled, well I suppose everywhere was unsettled – So a long vacation sounded good. The first day in Colorado we went snowmobiling and every day that followed was go go go full of fun activities. On Anna’s working days I’d go off and visit flower shops and see the scene. All I can say is that it was a huge difference from the Bay Area, dark shops with buckets of mums. One shop owner even told me to hightail it back to SF because the Denver scene wasn’t happening. I thought his advice was interesting and I kept poking around – so curious! One day I walked into a studio filled to the brim with props and one huge, killer arrangement. I stood there and took it all in and after some time I hollered out – is anyone here? A lady came out and I told her I was visiting from SF and wonderingly if they might need some help (freelancers). She looked at me and called for the other 2 ladies to come out, told them I was looking to help and was from visiting from California. They told me to come back the next day and they’d put me to work. I later found out that at the moment I was standing alone in that entry room they had been in the back room discussing what to do as they needed help, but were not thrilled with applicants and had even said ‘we need someone from out of state’. Serendipity?!
Funny how 4-6 weeks turned into 4-6 months and then kept going, I was so quickly sucked in to a busy life in Colorado. The studio kept me busy, they really were slammed and I kept going back day after day. I learned so much as they worked on large events. I also learned that dealing with weather in Denver was much more difficult than the SF Bay Area’s very temperate climate.
What I had planned on being a 4-6 Week visit ended up turning into 11 years of living in Colorado.
